So yesterday night I had a discussion with my brother on laptops. I’ve been looking forward to upgrading my Acer to something lighter, faster and well, better for a while now… The 4 (Going on 5) year-old Acer I’m using is still functional but not very portable, is a bit loud (the darn fan), and is not very “pretty”. I have to admit, I’ve been eyeing the new 13″ Macbook…its sleek unibody design, aluminum case…it’s the perfect size, is pretty light and just so much fun to use. As well, Apple’s the back-to-school promotion means I would get a FREE iTouch with it! I asked my brother if he had any alternatives to the Macbook and he said (paraphrased) “It’s like (for no other better analogy), comparing apples and oranges. You can’t compare the two.”
Chris spent a good hour on Saturday at the Apple store showing me all the neat things that you can do on a Macbook and I was pretty sold. However I know that it’s not a cheap deal, and there are many less costly alternatives that have the same specs. I don’t need anything too too fancy…I mostly do word processing, internet…might need to run a few stats software.
So…I’m polling my readers to ask what they think. Should I go with the Macbook? It feels like I’m following the crowd and the “trend”. Do you have a good ORANGE alternative?

Specs only matter if they affect how you use your computer, otherwise, they’re just numbers. It’s like buying a car. You could do it strictly by numbers, but it’s better to take it for a spin and get a feel for it.
I’d just buy whatever you’re more likely to use. Whatever you’re going to love more in the long haul.
Truthfully,
I love my mac. Buuut… there are aspects to a mac that hinders. If you game (which you don’t…) and syncing with your phone (especially a blackberry) doesn’t work very well sometimes.
If you want a really fun laptop for pleasure a mac is great. Their service and genius bar is impeccable. Usability, interface thumbs up and it’s compact, lightweight form makes it easy for me to travel with for work when I fly or take to starbucks to do work.
But your bro is right. It’s apple to oranges. I was lucky, I got mines on sale with a work discount. Of course it hurts the pocket.
Although, I haven’t met a single person who’s regret changing over to a mac or treat theirs like a second child =P
